Abandoned Mine Posts

For years, Decatur and Boggs townships in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania haven’t had clean drinking water; all the water supplies are contaminated with iron from abandoned mine drainage. It turns white clothes orange in the laundry and forces residents to carry in bottled water.

However, 2007 will bring new water lines and pumps bringing fresh water to the townships. This drinking water infrastructure project is being funded by the federal Abandoned Mine Lands Fund.

By the way, this AML project uses money that was available even before the recent set of SMCRA Title IV amendments were passed in December. Federal law allows a certain amount of AML funding to be used for drinking water infrastrucure projects.
